Jacksonwald Students Hoist Turkeys Over their Heads in School's Quirky, yet Heartfelt, Annual Raffle

Thanksgiving traditions in Exeter include pumpkin pie, mashed potatoes… and, at Jacksonwald Elementary, the unforgettable sight of students triumphantly hoisting frozen turkeys over their heads. The school’s wonderfully quirky annual turkey raffle returned today, filling the cafeteria with thunderous chants of “Turkey! Turkey! Turkey!” as students and staff eagerly awaited the announcement of this year’s winners.
For the lucky few whose names were called, joy erupted instantly. Students leapt from their seats to cheers, high-fives and hugs from classmates before hurrying to Principal Matt Hathaway to claim their frosty prize. With a little assistance—and a lot of enthusiasm—each winner proudly lifted their frozen turkey overhead, sending the cafeteria into another round of cheers and delighted applause.
The tradition began more than 15 years ago under retired Lausch and Jacksonwald principal Dr. Joe Schlaffer. After a brief hiatus during the pandemic and leadership transitions, the event was revived in 2022 and quickly reclaimed its status as a cherished school-wide celebration tied to positive behavior.
“The time we saw the most misbehavior was right before the holidays,” Dr. Schlaffer reflected while recalling the raffle’s origins. “The whole idea was that kids could go home with a turkey, and when their parents asked, ‘Where did you get a turkey?’ they could proudly say they earned it at school for good behavior. I always thought it was a win-win-win for students, families, and the community.”
Once again, Weis Markets in Oley added heart—and humor—to the beloved tradition by donating 20 turkeys, enough for one winner in every classroom.
“Jacksonwald can’t thank Weis enough for their generosity,” Principal Hathaway said as the event concluded. “We’re also incredibly proud of our school community, which comes together to celebrate student accomplishments and positive behavior with traditions that bring so much joy.”
